Heartworms are deadly parasites spread by mosquitos that live in the heart and the blood vessels of the lungs in dogs as well as cats, ferrets, and other wildlife. Prevention is the best course of action. Cases without treatment in dogs almost always prove fatal, and there is no course of treatment available for cats.
